Abstract
  • The reconfiguration of hospital services in England has been a contentious issue. There have been local public protests against hospital closures and more recently a concerted effort by the government to communicate the clinical case for change. The final report of the NHS Next Stage Review is due for publication in early summer 2008 and is expected to include recommendations from regional groups of clinical staff on how services should be provided in their respective areas. This is intended to prompt primary care trusts (PCTs) to review the current combination of services they commission. This briefing examines the recent debate over hospital configuration in England; describes what changes are currently being proposed together with the main factors driving these changes; sets out the process by which services can be reconfigured; and identifies a series of issues which will need to be addressed by policy makers.
