  • As the government seeks to accelerate change in the NHS and make services more responsive to public demands, the argument for market discipline versus planned provision is being hotly debated: can a highly centralised system sit comfortably alongside a market-led approach?; can market forces provide an effective response to the growing demands on health and social care services brought by an ageing population?; and what are the real trade offs between equity of access and more patient choice? Three commentators take differing views: supporting the introduction of stronger market incentives to prompt improved performance among secondary care providers; arguing against even modest experimentation with stronger market incentives; and asking whether it is possible to combine the best of market disciplines with planned provision.
