Abstract
  • Primary care groups (PCGs) offer new opportunities for partnerships between health and social care. There is now widespread support for collaboration in order to achieve better integrated care for people with both short-term and continuing care needs. But there is also recognition that this is a complex task. As they embark on implementing the partnership arrangements set out in 'The New NHS' white paper, health and local authorities - together with their colleagues in primary care - will need to build on current knowledge and experience of health and social care collaboration. This briefing paper is intended to help in that task. It discusses the experiences of five development sites in England that took part in the King's Fund Joint Commissioning project during 1996-98. It reviews their achievements and considers the problems that arose, drawing out implications for primary care groups.
