Abstract
  • 'The Health of Londoners' is the first public health report for Greater London. London lags behind other UK and European cities in its lack of a strong city-wide approach to health and this report is a vital initial step in putting the health of Londoners on the map. The report concentrates on those factors, largely outside the NHS, that have an impact on health, such as housing, transport and education. Its aim is to highlight some of the key issues that need to be tackled in London rather than to attempt to cover every aspect of health in the capital. For each of the issues examined, the authors have drawn out the further action needed at a pan-London level. The main challenge repeatedly presented by the report's analysis is that of tackling London's growing health divide. The authors believe that this report provides impetus for more effective public health action between the NHS, local authorities, the independent sector, London-wide agencies and central government into the new millennium.
