Abstract
  • This report deals with the two major areas of independent health care activity: acute sector and long-term care sector. In the independent health care context, acute sector broadly refers to the range of medical and surgical outpatients and inpatient treatment normally covered by private medical insurance. Long-term care sector refers to care provided in nursing and residential homes for elderly and chronically sick people, with no medical supervision. It was prepared to inform the work of the King's Fund Commission on the Future of Acute Services in London. It is being published in advance of the Commission's Strategy for London in order to inform debate about the future of health care in the capital, but should not be interpreted as anticipating the recommendations of the Commission's final report.
