Abstract
  • Health care professionals face increasing pressure to obtain the views of service users and yet many are concerned that there may be some users, such as those suffering from mental distress, who are unable to provide useful or valid opinions about services received. This publication aims to reassure those who find themselves facing this dilemma by examining the findings of previous and current work in the area. Studies show that if some consideration is given to methodology, useful and valid information can be obtained. Both inpatient and community settings are covered and additional consideration is given to young, black and minority, and elderly users. The relevance of patient advocacy is discussed, and issues of concern to users are identified in a checklist of questions relevant to difference areas of service delivery.
