Abstract
  • This project paper is the result of a series of small informal meetings held at the King's Fund Centre during 1971-73 to consider various aspects of the care of children in hospital and, in particular, to discuss ways of meeting the emotional needs of the child in the ward. The ideas and opinions collected in this document are those expressed by staff and parents living and working in the ward situation and as such do not claim to be a comprehensive review of the subject nor to provide a definitive guide to the care of children in hospital. The compilation aims to be of use in the following three ways: 1) as background information for nursing officers and administrators who have to make decisions on policies and procedures that will help or hinder the ward staff in their efforts to meet the emotional and physical needs of children in hospital; 2) as guidance material for tutors and clinical instructors who need to keep in touch with the thinking of their colleagues on the service side in order to prepare their students adequately; 3) as an introduction to the care of children in hospital for those coming into the situation for the first time eg. medical students, nurses in training, social workers, play leaders, teachers.
