Abstract
  • This report details research undertaken by the landscape architect of the King's Fund into development of new hospital grounds. It includes advice to hospital planners and builders as to how they should make use of the natural resources of their sites. When a hospital is to be built, extreme care is taken by architects, doctors, engineers, nurses and many others to ensure the building fulfils its intended function, and yet the detailed siting and layout of the grounds tend to be forgotten. The garden advisers of the King's Fund, through their work for hospital gardens, became aware of this gap in designing and building knowledge and of the serious financial consequences resulting from failure to pay attention to the subject until too late. This report was commissioned to study the particular needs of hospitals. It is published in the hope that it will help future hospitals to provide grounds that are visually stimulating, useful and economical to maintain.
